Survivor

I came across a quote last week that said: “I survived because the fire inside me burned brighter than the fire around me.”  It really seemed to hit home right when I needed it.  See, I’m a biomedical chemistry major with a pre-med concentration and a Spanish minor.  This is my fourth year of college.  My dream since I was a little girl has been to go to medical school or at least somewhere in the medical field.  But no one seems to think that I can do it.  My friends, my professors, my advisors. They all have been telling me since day one that I need to change my major.  I haven’t been listening to them for the past three years.  I’ve just been keeping myself motivated, trying to prove them wrong.  But for some reason, this year, their discouragement seems to be getting to me.  I mean, I have worked for 3 three and have managed to stay in the major that I am in.  I only have one more year left, and they are still saying that I should do something different in grad school rather than go into the medical field.  It’s like no matter how successful I am, they refuse to see that I can do.  They refuse to believe in me.  I’ve had to work to keep my own fire aflame.  To keep it shining brighter than the discouragement around me.  I’m proud of myself. However, I still long for those close to me, and those who I thought were supposed to believe in me to support me.  But I guess we can’t all have what we want.  It’s frustrating because no matter how successful I am, it is still never enough to gain respect from others.  I don’t understand, but that’s ok.  I have accepted that I will probably never have people who are truly 100% down for me.  I have to rely on myself and God.  I have to keep my own head up, work hard, and wipe my own tears.  It will all be worth it in the end.  I guess what I’m trying to say is that even if no one around you is down for you, keep your flame burning brighter, show them you’re a fighter and prove them wrong.
